Severin na Kupi is a village in Gorski Kotar. It was formed in the 16th century by the Frankopan family, who erected a castle there in the spring of 1558. After the Zrinski and Frankopan uprising (1671), the castle was taken over by the Hungarian, and then came into the hands of the Chamber of Towns. Then in 1682 Leopold I. Habsburg donated it to Colonel Ivan Franjo Oršić. In 1803 the Orsic family gave the former Franciscan castle to the French. From 1809 to 1813, Severin on Kupi was under French rule as part of the Illyrian provinces. From 1816 to 1822 it belonged to the Kingdom of Iliria, after which it was returned to Banska Croatia. In 1823 Karlo Oršić sold the Severin Na Kupi castle to nobleman A. Vraniczany Dobrinović, who held it together with the local government until the middle of the 19th century. For the Croatian National Revival, the castle was a gathering place of Croatian patriots. The castle was restored in 1958-59 after taking some damage in World War II.
